This roadrunner hangs around my home which leads me to believe that meat
eater and will hunt for snakes, small rodents and other birds. You can watch it
stealthily sneaking up on other birds and, given the opportunity, it will spear
another bird in its back with its beak then beat it on a rock. This roadrunner is
about 20'' long. On the other end of the scale, humming birds are also
frequent visitors to my home. These tiny birds are fascinating to watch
because of their capability to hover. They love to take the nectar from flowers
but also eat insects and spiders to obtain the protein that they need.
The cactus to the left came into bloom this past spring while I was
still here in Yuma. The blooms lasted just a few days
The praying mantis, below, is coloured tan so it can blend into its
desert surroundings. Their diet consists of mainly other insects
although, given the chance, they will take a humming bird or even a
small lizard. It will also eat its relative including when mating.
